Museum Attendant & Front Office Support

Serves as a front-line customer service provider and information guide to Idaho’s Mammoth Cave and the visiting public. Provides support for the self-guided tour, museums, and security operations, including monitoring all museum spaces to ensure safe and reliable access and enforcing museum rules and regulations.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily opening and closing procedures as required.
  • Taking admissions and processing payments through our software platform (Square)
  • Maintain accurate records of cash and card transactions
  • Assist in merchandise sales, including displaying and promoting products
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the admission and sales area

Additional Duties & Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Operations Manager, protect the visitors, staff, and collections of Idaho’s Mammoth Cave and Museums.
  • Patrol the museums and responds to alarms and cameras.
  • Maintain surveillance of the visiting public to avoid damage, either intentional or accidental, to the objects within the collection and on display.
  • Provide services to visitors and colleagues, e.g., answering questions, giving directions, refer to other sources of information (i.e., website) when appropriate.
  • Stay informed by asking questions and learning more about our history and museum artifacts to answer visitor questions better.
  • Seek to minimize or contain conflict and engages Operations Manager when needed and as instructed.
  • Enforce policies related to the conduct of museum visitors, as directed.
  • Control and monitor access and exit points of buildings.
  • Performs the duties of escort into restricted areas of Idaho’s Mammoth Cave and Museums as directed.
  • Act in a calm and decisive manner in assisting in evacuating the public and staff from the building during fire alarms or other emergencies.
  • Complete incident reports as necessary and submits such reports to the Operations Manager.
  • Perform daily inspections of displays and “back of the house” spaces and reports on safety issues, security issues, and the physical condition of the museum’s facilities and equipment.
  • Work closely with other Idaho’s Mammoth Cave staff members to ensure the effective coordination of service efforts through regular communication.
  • Act as a highly visible representative of Idaho’s Mammoth Cave and Museums Security staff.
  • Present a clean, neat, and professional image in accordance with established uniform and appearance standards.
  • Maintains a constructive and positive demeanor. Engages with all visitors and staff in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, including basic cleaning of displays and glass cases, sweeping, dusting, etc.

Basic Qualifications

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications to be considered for this role:

  • Good math skills and ability to count accurately for admission and payment processing
  • Familiarity with and ability to use Square software on a tablet, computer, or phone
  • Ability to operate a computer and navigate software applications
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle cash and financial transactions
  • Excellent customer service experience or the ability to learn.
  • Ability to patrol museum buildings for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to see clearly in various lighting conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and use a fire extinguisher if necessary.
  • Must have a personal cell phone and reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to work in outdoor weather conditions.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Good written and oral communication skills in English; ability to learn and follow procedures and adapt to new procedures; attention to detail; ability to be trained, CPR and/or first aid training desirable.

Additional Information

We are hiring 1-2 people for the Museum Attendant position. Below are the schedules we are hiring for:

  • 9:30 AM – 6:30 PM, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
  • 9:30 AM – 6:30 PM, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Will be required to wear a uniform provided by Idaho’s Mammoth Cave. We are open seasonally from May 1st – October 1st. This position will be scheduled to work on some holidays, including Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and labor day from 8:30 a.m – 6:00 p.m.
